Parenting & Family Therapy

Parenting is a lifetime journey.
It can be joyous, filled with pleasure and rewarding experiences. However it can also bring many challenges and be difficult. It is not an easy job and seems more so in our constantly changing world. We are here to help you on your journey.

Parenting
Most parents have times when they feel overwhelmed, lack confidence, have feelings of confusion and have fears of not knowing how to handle situations. Parenting skills are not necessarily innate.

Being a parent often raises questions of how to bring up a happy and healthy child, while considering how to satisfy the parent’s own needs and balance the many roles that parents encounter. Major problems confronting parents are:

  • Insufficient self-confidence
  • Limit setting
  • Insufficient knowledge of children’s growth and development needs
  • Lack of awareness of their own needs
  • Difficult feelings such as anger and guilt

Parenting Therapy
Parents need help, support and practical advice with specific solutions in their development as individuals, parents and as a family unit. Understanding the cognitive, social and emotional aspects of the stages of development are essential to help establish realistic expectations. Families are continually facing challenges as the parent(s) and the child go through different stages:

  • Becoming a new parent
  • Dealing with an infant’s needs
  • Handling a toddler who wants to make his/her own decisions
  • Navigating sibling rivalry
  • The early school years
  • The high school years
  • Adolescence – dealing with conflicts; teen independence and dependence
  • The transition to college and/or separating from home
  • The child as a young adult and ultimately, a possible parent

All these changes can parallel stages in the parent’s own changing needs in their personal growth and development as they get older.
